These are indicative figures for the Worthing area for a fence about 1.8m high. They are not quotes. They are based on published UK trade price guides from October 2026, pitched for the South East, where prices run a little above the national average. A standard panel or section is 1.83m (6ft) wide, so 6 panels is about 11m. Not sure how many? Count the posts and take one away.

What pushes the price up

  • Removing and disposing of an old fence and its concrete footings
  • Concrete posts and gravel boards instead of timber
  • Slopes that need stepped or raked fencing
  • Narrow side access where everything is carried through
  • Heavier duty boards and stainless fixings near the sea
  • Small jobs, which cost more per metre because travel and setup stay the same

Questions

How much does a 20 metre fence cost?

As a rough guide, about £1,300 to £2,000 for 20m (11 panels) of panel fencing and £1,800 to £2,800 for closeboard, both around 1.8m high. Removing an old fence and adding a gate are extra.

Why do quotes vary so much?

Mostly posts and groundwork. Concrete posts and gravel boards cost more than timber but last far longer, and digging out old concrete footings takes time.

Is it cheaper to share the cost with my neighbour?

Often, yes. If the fence is on a shared boundary, many neighbours agree to split the cost. Agree it in writing before the work starts.
